"Simplicity means the achievement of maximum effect with minimum means." — Dr. Koichi Kawana

Welcome

You've found my meeting place. I enjoy interacting with lots of folks, on and offline. Hopefully, this will work well to complement that. Topics range from education to software development.

I look forward to your comments and feedback.

Professional

I am a software architect and developer actively engaged in the development of state-of-the art desktop and Web applications for the small business markets.

Technology focus includes:

  • Web Development
  • Flex 2 / ActionScript 3 -
  • OpenLaszlo - An Open Source XML/Flash compiler and server platform
  • OS X Cocoa - Apple's world-class Development Environment and Frameworks
  • Language Parsers & Interpreters

Reading List

I absolutely love to read. Always have. Hopefully, you do too!

I will be posting thoughts on various books and articles that I have found interesting and provocative (even if I don't always agree with them), in the past, currently by my bedside, or in my backpack or pocket.

On Software

Not only is software my profession, it is also a main hobby and passion. Yes, I'm a geek/software dud.

On Learning

To read like an attorney,
Write like a founding father,
Calculate like an entrepreneur, and
Serve like a disciple.

- Dr. Oliver DeMille

This is the "sound bite" I have found which most eloquently captures what I want to teach my children.

I have read Dr. DeMille's book, "A Thomas Jefferson Education" and I am very intriged by Dr. DeMille's efforts in "Building Statesmen" at George Wythe College. I can't say I'm totally on board with everything he espouses but I think he is well worth listening to if you have an interest in education or home schooling.

I am also reading Jerome Bruner's "Toward a Theory of Instruction" which I will be reporting on later.

On Robots

This past year I was a mentor and coach to my (eldest) son's FIRST LEGO Mindstorms competition. It was fantastic! I highly recommend it!

The competition recognized excellence in many areas; not just the "robot arena". As part of the competition we did a science research project. Arlene Lantz, a wonderful teacher and fellow FLL mentor helped the kids hook up with a local project that the team researched and reported on. Please visit to learn more about Acid Mine Drainage

Our community also sponsors the FIRST Robotics team which I look forward to participating in more fully when my son is eligible. PBS has an interesting article on it.

Scouting

Between my 3 children we have the Scouts covered; Brownies, Cub Scouts, & Boy Scouts! If you have Scouts you might find some of the information and links helpful.

The CubTrax Spreadsheets are very well done, providing a quick overview of the advancement status of each Scout, Den, and Pack.

Who do you consider to be the "Greatest Modern Minds"? Check here to learn more.

Mac Apps

There are many great applications available for Apple's OSX. Few are expensive and many are free.

The accelerating advancement in every scientific field of endeavor is driving our lives, our culture, our world, into an event, beyond which we can not even imagine.
